Pay Me What I'm Worth

November 20, 2019

So today is Latina Equal Payday. A day that is meant to inform the public about what this means, why it's a national day and why it needs more attention. More attention, aka press, that allows this info to go beyond those of this minority in order for change to occur.

Now, I have to be honest, I don't really think about my ethnicity unless I'm explaining why I can't speak Spanish. A conversation that usually consists of, "Yes I'm Latina, no I don't speak Spanish, Why? Well, surprise I'm adopted."

The reason why I don't think about my ethnicity often is not because I'm ashamed or because I don't want to embrace it, it has to do with the fact that it's my physical identity but mentally, I have not been immersed/ I don't know enough about my Spanish culture to identify as a full Latina, that is, until recently.

From my reading students, that I taught during my senior year of high school to the four years I spent in Arizona at university, that's the first time I was fully enveloped into the loop of my biological culture. My students and friends provided me with scrumptious authentic cuisine and music, all while simultaneously mocking me for my gringo accent. Which ya know, valid.

Regardless of how I may view and understand myself, based on my skin color, to the world, I am a fully authentic Latina woman. The only time that's negative is when it comes to the working world.

Shortlist of how fellow minorities and I are discriminated against:

1. Latinas typically earn only 54 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men
2. A Latina will lose $1,121,440 over the course of her career to the pay gap
3. Latina pay gap's closed by the only 4 cents in the last 4 decades
4. Latina's need to work until we're 93 years old to catch up to the pay white men earn by 60 years old
5. For every 100 entry-level men who are promoted to manager, only 68 Latinas are promoted

Sucks right. You're telling me even though I've done everything right, have a plethora of knowledge and life experience, it essentially means shit? That based on a claim with no proof, I am not deemed as a worker worthy of equal pay?

Pardon my french, but what bullshit.

Now that we're all fired up,
The Lean In Organization has provided advice on how to change the system:

1. Conduct a pay audit
2. Ensure that hiring and promotions are fair for all
3. Provide equal opportunities for career advancement
4. Make it a norm for Mujeres to negotiate

All common sense actions but nevertheless, a common courtesy not provided to everyone.

Even if this doesn't affect you, I hope this pisses you off. I hope this surface-level article makes you feel more educated on this topic, and you now understand why it's a national day. But more importantly, I hope this raises your awareness about what your peers may be going through. Be an alley, stand up for those who are being taken advantage of and to my fellow minorities, don't feel invalid about arguing the system.

Equality shouldn't be a privilege, it's a right.

On an unrelated side note:
Since my latest fashion post, on the BOF, Business of Fashion, Instagram account, they recently posted about an article they published that discusses how sustainability will be both the biggest challenge and opportunity in 2020. Definitely a good read and further look into this topic in the fashion world.

Till next time, cheers!

Don't Kill My Vibe

November 17, 2019

A lot of things in life are easier said than done.

Dishing out advice is second nature to myself; looking out for the well-being of my loved ones is always at the forefront of my mind. This trait is both a blessing and a curse. The curse being that for myself, the advice goes in one ear and out the other.

Recently, I've been learning how to take this weakness and try to evolve myself. For the first time, I have started to actually listen to my body and provide the necessities it's yearning for. Changing my mindset has come easier than expected thanks to social media. A medium that's often bashed for being the source of negativity. Ironic, I know.

Here's my take on it, you can either spend your whole life looking at everything that's wrong with a person, place and thing or take time to understand why something or someone isn't so bad after all.

Though it's easier to pick apart the bad things in life, rather than spending time to find a positive outlook, this way of life is v destructive.

Cancel culture is really having a moment, so negativity is normality now. Normal; an extremely common English word that's supposed to be neutral yet is extremely destructive. And with that, I digress.

Anyways, back to the og topic, which was....oh yes, social media.

This medium led me to find Sarahs Day; an Instagram account that belongs to an Aussie Influencer named Sarah. Her content is mainly focused on fitness, healthy eating and living. To say her bubbly personality is contagious is an understatement. Between her Insta stories, captions and Youtube videos, she was able to re-spark my old flame with fitness. Thanks to Sarah, I have a newfound love for fitness, more specifically, running (which mind you, never in my life would I have ever thought would happen).

The endorphins that are released from working out has helped me to embody this same bubbly spirit. Though this has held true for the past couple of months, in October I did notice a difference in my attitude. I noticed that I was feeling a little more sluggish than usual but also, this seemed normal. This often happens as the seasons change. It gets darker earlier and being cold makes me want to snuggle on the couch rather than going on a run. With this decline in physical activity and motivation, I found myself becoming more irritable than normal. A feeling I hate because it translates from myself onto others. No Bueno.

I had been keeping tabs on these changes because, in my gut, I knew something was off but at the same time, I wanted to watch these changes for x amount of time to make sure it wasn't just one-off week or something like that. But after coming back from my trip to Arizona, it felt like a switch flipped immediately. I went back to harboring the same feelings again. Back to feeling off and irritable.

I was hesitant at first to even blame the weather because I thought the boost in my mood while I was in Arizona was mainly related to seeing my friends after months of being away from each other, but then again, I knew it was more than that. The signs were there and after seeing the immediate switch in my mood I knew I had it. I have Winter Blues.

What the literal frick. I've lived in this state, with these seasonal changes all my life and had never experienced this before. What's different? Well, let me tell you what's different. The difference now is that I went away for four years and experienced 365 days of endless sunshine.

Going from endless sunshine to being engulfed in a blackout by 5 pm everyday can really do ya in.

Now, when I first read about Winter Blues, I wrote it off as being nothing. Which, yes, thank god it is nothing all too serious compared to a plethora of what I could have but still, it is something. Winter Blues is a step before SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder. As I embarked on research, I knew it was not the latter because I did not meet all the symptoms, but regardless, the fact that I did check the boxes for Winter Blues was unsettling. Having been fortunate to have never dealt with situations similar to this is why I believe it shook me more than I expected.

Like I've said before, I've had this gut feeling I had this but wanted to keep a mental report to back up my claim. So it wasn't so much of a surprise just freaky. Luckily, it's self-diagnosed; in order to get back on track, one just needs to purchase a light therapy lamp and workout more. So again, nothing serious. But that feeling of knowing I have to tell my parents why I am going to purchase that lamp and explaining I felt off is not fun. A conversation that has everything to do with me but makes it seem like there's room for discussion of how they could have helped. Which honestly, besides making me workout more (which is not their responsibility) or figuring out how to move the clouds so the sun can shine more, there is nothing they can or could have done to prevent this.

The thought of having other's sympathy or cracking the door open to unnecessary guilt is a heavy feeling. After a 5-minute pity party, my mind wandered to those who have had this same type of realization but for a worse diagnosis. My heart honestly aches for them because I hope to god others don't have this similar feeling. A feeling that whatever they are going through feels like it will burden others, thus making them keep it to themselves and as a result, not receive proper treatment.

Any other time, I would have just kept this to myself and figured it was not important to mention to anyone. But ya know, new year, new me blah blah blah still applies even now. I'm working on sharing my thoughts and feelings more which is why I told my parents what's up. After that, it felt like a weight was lifted, I've rearranged my weekly schedule and got my lamp which is my new bestie and I can honestly say I feel like myself again. Also, my eye stopped twitching so things are really looking up out here.

(Sidenote: based on the depth I take ordinary topics it seems shocking I can't/really dislike talking about my feelings, right? Well, if you couldn't tell, my preferred form of communication is writing).

Whether you read this long-winded answer about why I listen to my body and why it's okay to listen to your gut or not, understand this: whatever you are feeling is valid.

Whether it's mental or physical, your body always knows when something is wrong before you're willing to accept it yourself. So, trust your body and listen to it. Besides checking in with yourself on a self-care level, this can be applied to any situation. When you're working out for example. If you feel tired (actually physically exhausted and not just making up excuses), just do a quick low-energy routine, or don't even go. If you truly believe it will be a waste of time, take that L and go crush your workout tomorrow.

Shit happens but don't let it kill your vibe. There are always solutions to whatever is going on but it's up to you to listen to your body. More often than not, it's smarter than us so just sit back and let it take the lead on what it needs.

Till next time, cheers!

I Have A Question

A short yet very important tangent that's all based on one question.

Why isn't everything sustainable?

It's 2019 and there are still companies who feel they don't have a responsibility to alter their habits and become more sustainable. I understand I'm not a business owner, nor am I qualified to pass judgment on business plans but on another note, I'm also not an idiot.

If one wants their business to perform or relate to a broader audience, which I'm presuming is everyone's goal, one would keep tabs on how to be more successful. Do research to watch trends, see what's catching the public eye, what changes need to be made to your business model. So on and so forth.

The biggest and most useful trend to hit society is sustainability. Due to the hole in the market for sustainable and ethical companies, this niche has been filled by smaller companies. Hence, people's interest in wanting to buy from small or local businesses. Since the spike in environmental and general ethical awareness amongst consumers, people want to purchase items from brands that are up to their new standards. So much so that according to Solitaire Townsend Forbes article 88% Of Consumers Want You To Help Them Make A Difference.

As we've heard before, all it takes is one person. One person to do the right thing, spread the word about an oppressed niche or even talk about their new diet in order to see change. During 2018, in November, a survey was conducted by Futerra, where they had 1,004 people from the USA and UK answer whether they believed personal actions such as being sustainable and donating makes a difference in the world.

The result? 96% of people feel their own actions can make a difference according to Futerra, Townsend reported.

Then, data from another survey, also conducted by Futerra, focused on brands and their direct impact on the environment. 88% of people said they want brands to help them be more environmentally friendly and ethical according to Townsend’s article.

This consumeristic trend is not only real but is a step in the right direction. A direction many corporations need to adjust to. Now, things take time which is understandable but that is not the point I want to make right now. My point has to do with accountability.

How is it that other companies such as Love Beauty and Planet, Athleta, Patagonia and more have decided to base their business model around creating a sustainable foundation from the start and or have altered half or all of their products to become more up to date with environmental needs, while others simply just proceed on with their old destructive ways without a second thought?

A small snippet of what the companies mentioned above are doing:

1. Love Beauty and Planet bottles are made from 100% recycled materials, chemical-free and vegan
2. Athleta's material is made up of 60% sustainable fibers
3. Patagonia is a transparent company that allows customers to return unwanted old garments in order to be properly recycled and reused, donates 10% of pre-tax profits to environmental groups and more.

If Love Beauty and Planet can create recycled and recyclable bottles, so can Dove.
If Athleta can create high quality and performing sustainable sports gear, so can Nike and Lululemon.
If Patagonia can donate money towards environmental groups, so can North Face.

Companies have a responsibility to provide the best of the best to their customers. They have the responsibility of being transparent. They have a responsibility to be ethical too.

Why should it take them being dragged on the internet for them to change their prehistoric ways? Why do we allow them to get away with it? Why not just make that change themselves? Also, from a PR standpoint, isn't this also a smart move in order to save face too? Idk just a thought.

I would say I'm sorry about this rant but I'm not. I kinda wanna live idk till I'm past 50 which won't happen if we keep living the same way we currently are.

Try to reevaluate what you're buying and see if there are other environmentally better choices. I will say, sustainable products will be more expensive so pick and choose what you are going to switch out with your own discretion, a small change is better than nothing, but also understand the future outcome and impact is great. One person can make a difference. Just look at history.

So again, I have a question. Why is everyone not switching their business models to be sustainable? Why are we letting large corporations get away with outdated practices? Bring on the heat ladies and gents. Change doesn’t thrive in silence.

Till next time, cheers!

Understanding the Underrated

October 20, 2019

Now with this post, I'm going to be honest, I'm not sure where exactly I want to take this. I'm about to share a thought that I've been pondering for some time now.

Awhile back, I was at home having lunch with my parents. We were munching on the deli slices my nana had purchased from Natali, an authentic Italian grocery store just outside of Chicago. As I was constructing a gorgeous Italian sub, full of Prosciutto and Mortadella, my mom looked at me and said, "I love that you love food."

I'm sorry, what?

This phrase seemed so strange. As I looked at my mom quizzically, she elaborated. She went on to say she loves that I don't over think anything and always eat what I want. In no way was this judgmental, she was merely stating a fact. When I eat, I will eat whatever looks and sounds good. I don't overthink by looking too far into things such as calories and so forth. This, this is an important piece of information.

I eat what I want because I can. I am lucky to say I have a healthy relationship with food. Again, this seems strange to be writing about, even pointing out but the gravity of privilege that weighs into this phrase is strong. A phrase unfortunately many cannot relate to. But why- why is this a privilege? Well, here's why.

Food can be a huge obstacle, even the evil villain in some peoples stories. There are people who have an eating disorder, or have some type of disease that prevents them from eating, rather being feed through a feeding tube, or people who need to take medication but then in turn, disrupts their appetite. So again, the fact that I can say I have the ability to choose what I want to eat and when I want to eat is a privilege. Something that seems so simple to most but is not to many.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that things in life seem simple but always understand the gravity of everyday abilities. We don't understand what we have until it's pointed out to us which again is another strange thing.

Why can't we see why we should grateful everyday? Why does it always have to be other people who point it out to us for us to see?

I feel blessed and understand how privileged I am to say:

I have a healthy relationship with food.
I have the ability to control my body of what it eats.
I have the ability to control when I eat.
I have the financial ability to eat how I want to eat.

Besides just eating food, understand that food is a gateway into understanding cultures, a different and savory way of experiencing life. A level of normality that is unfortunately unattainable for some.

I guess the message I am trying to relay is that this is, no pun intended, a food for thought moment. A thought that ties into my recent posts about the 30 Day Challenge. Understanding and appreciating what you have. Know that privilege is presented is many forms; it's not always big things.

Though we should carry this mindset daily, it is a fitting topic to take with you as we transition into the holiday season. By understanding what you have this will help to understand what you can give to the world because there's so much on person can do. So much you can do.

The world can never have too many acts of kindness and love.

Till next time, cheers!

Cultivating Creativity

October 18, 2019

Being 22 means that I am a member of Generation Z; the generation that grew up with the privilege of having traditional and new ways of learning, playing and being creative. I was able to draw on paper but I was also taught how to draw on the computer- thanks for those fond memories Kid Pix.

From here, that software was just the beginning of my exposure to technology. I feel as though I am aging myself since I grew up during a time when the iPod was a strange 'thing' and the company Apple seemed like a strange new futuristic company that may or may not work out. (Little did we know the impact it would have on the world). I had witnessed the evolution of these gadgets, the company and the internet as a whole.

Facebook was the latest 'it' thing to have around 2008. MySpace who?

Then, Twitter was the next platform I eagerly joined in 2010. While Twitter took a hot sec to takeoff, since people took awhile to understand how to work and properly utilize it beyond a space to fangirl over celebrities, it slowly become Facebook 2.0. A platform that allowed for more creative freedom. Then next thing I knew, new platforms kept popping up left and right. Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest and Youtube.

During this time, I was finding new outlets that let me continue to grow creatively in a way I wasn't able to do before. I was watching videos of fashion hauls, following accounts for fashion, hair, and beauty inspiration, while also having a place to store and share my photos and thoughts with others.

As I previously mentioned in another post, fashion is my safe haven. My comfort blanket that I love to share with others. Unbeknownst to me, the pictures I had been sharing of my outfits either on myself or laid out on the floor followed by descriptive captions would soon become known as 'Outfit Of The Days' and 'Flat-lays.' Techniques that are now constantly used by fashion bloggers today.

Fast forward to 2019, a time where bitterness is as potent as a sour Warhead, these media platforms have grown. They've become a place where it seems as though,

"Everyone on Instagram is a photographer. Or a chef. Or an artist. Or a fashion blogger. Or a dancer. Which is pretty awesome actually. People didn't get this chance to showcase their talent earlier. Do your thing. Be creative. Let the whole world see it. Sorry if you were expecting a joke," (Anonymous).

Too often, there is a stigma and mockery that follows being excited or even passionate about being creative, especially when it comes to Instagram. It seems like everyone is a chef, fashionista, dancer or photographer because for the first time, these people have been given the opportunity to share their gift with the world. The first opportunity to share and display their passion, thus the overload of similar accounts.

On another related note, this stigma is a general normality that's carried with the arts. In terms of academics in school, if one understands and excels in traditional courses, they're deemed as smart. If one isn't able to keep up, then it's embarrassing to not be good and need extra help. But if one isn't good at fine arts, then it's okay, "not everyone was made to be creative." A traditional job is on a higher pedestal, whereas a job in the creative arts is not deemed as credible and risky.

Now, this is not an argument of who deserves more praise than the other, or who is smarter. Rather, I am merely questioning why each worlds aren't looked at as equal? Equally, they are both challenging, important, and made for specific people. Weaknesses do not make people any less of a human, rather just an area they have room to grow in. With weakness comes strength; no matter the strength, allow people to celebrate what they were made to do.

More often than not, social media is a joke. In some regards, yes the Sugar Bear Hair and other useless brand deals do not help this stigma, but nevertheless, I stand behind the platforms since at the end of the day, they're a creative outlet. Being 'extra' in order to bring your vision to life, organizing your feed by color or filter and connecting with people based on similar interest is the point and thrill of it all. Clicking through endless artistic accounts is what gets my mind racing 1,000 miles an hour. There's endless creative possibilities of what visions I get, want to bring to life and research I can conduct to gain further inspiration.

If you don't understand or see the point, there's nothing wrong with that. To all their own. There are other passions people have that I don't understand. But just because you may not have the same passion as another person does not make their passion any less.

Are there aspects that need to be changed? Of course! All of this is still new. So as the platforms continue to alter for the better, continue to say your jokes, make the memes- they're pretty entertaining and at times true. But understand that these platforms have cultivated a creative spark and spirit that is not going to be dulled anytime soon.

Till next time, cheers!

Food For Thought

October 8, 2019

Today marks the end of the 30 Day Challenge. A challenge created by Alfie Deyes; a challenge that surprised me and made me reevaluate my life. Now, that sounds deeper than I intended it to but I guess that's fitting since this challenge ending up being deeper than I had originally anticipated.

In my previous post, I discussed how my challenge was to focus on what I have rather than what I don't have. Within the first week, I had an epiphany. That epiphany being that I have the power to change the narrative. It's up to me to understand what I have, appreciate that but to then, figure out which steps I need to take towards accomplishing the goals I have for myself.

Not only did this new mindset allow me to understand what I actions I need to take in my life moving forward, as well as revamp my positive thinking, this challenge also allowed me to take charge of my life again. I've been able to have a new outlook moving forward when it comes to my finances, relationships, career, etc.

Although the challenge Deyes had set-up for his followers is technically 'over,' I challenge you to think of a goal for yourself to complete within 30 days. Try this challenge out for yourself! It doesn't have to be as in-depth as mine. It can be as simple as trying to read 2 hours a day for 30 days, or working out more, or unplugging from your phone. Whatever you choose to do, be dedicated to making those changes in your life!

Sometimes you have to be challenged in order for you to actually make changes in your life. So, here's to bettering yourself!

Till next time, cheers!

Skincare is Self-Care

September 29, 2019

(Published on Fashion 360 Magazine)

Skin is sensitive, both physically and literal for me. I didn't realize how lucky I was to have clear skin until I started experiencing breakouts.

If you have read my body bloom post, then the following information is nothing entirely new. If you are new, welcome lol. If not, you'll just be learning a little more about my journey with acne.

Prior to junior year of high school, I never had an issue with my skin. It was not sensitive, nor was it oily. The lack of issues led my skin to be put on the back burner of my mind. Then, things took a turn my junior year. My face would not calm down. I became a regular at the dermatologist; I was put on antibiotics, testing various face washes and lotions, was put on birth control, testing various topicals. So on and so forth.

Now, let me preface by saying this is not a pity party. As we all know, there are bigger issues in the world, but not having the ability to feel comfortable without wearing makeup sucks. It messes with your mind and confidence because you think it's the first thing people will notice about you and the only thing they will focus on. Luckily, we have come out on top my friends. I have found products and a routine that works. These products not only work, but they're also vegan and made with natural ingredients.

Have you ever watched the Youtube videos Allure produces? They are fascinating. Recently, I watched their video, 'The day in the life of a Dermatologist.' Though it was fascinating to watch Dr. Shereene Idriss go about her day, my favorite part was learning about her morning and nighttime skincare routine. This in turn, motivated me to modify my routine.

Over the past three weeks, I have put Dr. Idriss's tips and tricks to the test. I can honestly say I am extremely satisfied with the results. (I mean, I hoped for this because she is a dermatologist after all.) But I am so satisfied that I just had to share.

In the morning, it is best to wash your face with warm water only. Our skin has natural oils and when you use a face wash, you strip away the new layer your skin has created. (Using a face wash in the morning, strike one for me.) Then, dab your face with a towel to dry it; don't rub. (Strike two.)

Why dab and not rub? Dr. Idriss explained that when your skin is dry, a new layer of skin is working to regenerate and form. But by constantly rubbing your skin, this does not allow the new layer of skin to fully develop. Ultimately, creating a never-ending cycle of dry skin.

After washing my face, I use a reusable cotton pad to apply my Mario Badescu Rose Water Witch Hazel Toner. Next, I use a Vitamin C Radiance Serum by Honest to dab into my skin. The Honest Depuff Eye Gel is next to be applied to my face. The nice feature about this product is that a little goes a long way! The final skincare product the is applied to my face is a new favorite that was recommended by Dr. Idriss, Weleda Skin Food.

This cream is extremely hydrating and gives you a dewy glow, which I normally stray away from due to my oily skin, but there's something about this product that doesn't make me look and feel oily. Another suggestion Dr. Idriss made was to apply this cream with a beauty blender. This seemed strange to me at first but after using Weleda, I understand why this is important. It is a rich cream and by using the beauty blender, this helps to set the cream into your skin.

Since this article is all about skincare, I will not dive into my makeup routine. Rather, I will only make two suggestions in terms of a product and company to test out. As we all know, I have oily skin; shocking I know. This has led me to try a plethora of primers over the years. Recently, I have given Milk Hydro Grip Primer a try. Since it's a gel, it goes on cool and dries sticky which in turn, helps set my CC Cream I apply afterward. The CC Cream, setting power, and mascara I use are from Thrive Causemetics. Thrive is another paraben, sulfate, and cruelty-free company.

Once my day is over, one of the first things I do when I get home is use Honest Beauty Makeup Wipes to take off my makeup before changing into a comfy pair of sweatpants. From getting cozy to consuming a delicious meal, I hop into the shower. I wash my face with the First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser.

When it comes to washing my face at night, I have specific steps for specific days. On Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, I use my Clarisonic. I don't use my Clarisonic everyday since it would be too harsh and strip my skin down too much. So, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, I exfoliate my face with the Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner. Then, I repeat the same steps from my morning routine.

Apply Mario Badescu Rose Water Witch Hazel Toner (if I didn't exfoliate my face), Vitamin C Radiance Serum, and then the Honest Depuff Eye Gel. Before applying my face cream, I apply a Cosrx Acne Pimple Master Patch where it's needed. After the patched are placed on my spots, I will then massage Weleda Skin Food into my skin and hop into bed.

This seems like a lot of steps, but it's easy and quicker than you would think! As a subtle disclaimer, this routine works for me but skin varies person to person. The brands and products I have mentioned are not skin-specific. Meaning, they're not labeled as being only beneficial for a specific type of skin. As a general note, always do your research before investing.

Being aware of what you put on your body is just as important as as what you put in it!

Till next time, cheers!

For Better Or For Worse

September 27, 2019

Like many, Devil Wears Prada is a movie that is not only a classic that I've watched more times then I am willing to admit, but it is also a movie with a concept that continuously fascinates me. Each time I watch this film, I pick up a new lesson, easter egg or I find an old trend that's wormed its way back into todays fashion. Though from a young age, I have been in love with fashion, I understand this niche market is either loved or loathed. But regardless of how one feels, it will always be part of one's life.

Just as Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly had said Anne Hathaway's Andy,

"This stuff’? Oh, okay. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh, I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean. You’re also blindly unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic 'casual corner' where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”

And with that, I digress.

As I stated before, fashion is a 50/50 for people. No matter your stance on fashion, you cannot deny the fact that your clothes play a role in some shape, way and form within your life. We all have that one piece that brings back fond memories we hold dear to our heart, that makes us feel so confident we channel a different persona that day, or that is our comfort blanket.

I view fashion as being a walking form of art. Dramatic? Maybe, but hear me out. On the outside, we as humans are a blank canvas. Our body provides endless possibilities of outfits to wear and our mind provides us with endless ideas of how to wear outfits. Though I still consider myself to be introverted at times, fashion has allowed me to grow and gain confidence within myself to be extroverted.

It allowed me to present my personality and who I am to the world without having to say a single word. It allowed me to feel as though I found who I am. It has been a constant amongst the ever changing phases of my life. My clothes make me feel secure and confident with my decisions because my outfits are usually inspired by someone I look up to which whom possess characteristics I admire and want to channel myself.

Does this mean I am not staying true or putting up a fraud version of myself out into the world? No. Rather, I am allowing myself to highlight these characteristics I admire and do contain myself to be given the boost they need to shine.

I've had this thought about fashion for awhile now. To say it annoys me when people automatically assume I am snotty or stuck-up based on the pretense that I like fashion is an understatement. I never knew how to properly explain why clothes matter and play a role in your life until I read Amy Smilovic's Instagram caption for one of her pictures back in August.

Yes, I understand this all seems trivial and silly but can you deny the fact that you've had experiences similar to me? The first time you put on heels and felt like you could conquer the world, the first time you put on your new gym shoes and knew you would kill your next game, the first time you put on your scrubs knowing you were on your way to where you want to be.

No matter how you pick-out your outfit, with a lot of thought or very little, you picked those pieces for a reason. To feel some sort of comfort. That feeling of comfort lies into feeling confident with yourself and your gut. That no matter which decisions you have to make the rest of the day, whether your day was good or sucked, at least you know you did one thing right.

Till next time, cheers!

Changing The Narrative

September 22, 2019

Though it hasn't been a full 30 days since I started the 30 Day Challenge, here's what I have noticed thus far...

If you're new, welcome! If you've been here before, welcome back!

In my previous post, I mentioned that I am participating in Alfie Deyes 30 Day Challenge. The challenge I set out for myself is to focus on what I do have rather than what I want and don't have. I found that the phrase "I want..." is relevant for material things, jobs, relationships so on. Last week, I was thinking about where this narrative stems from. Why is it in a future tense that ultimately doesn't have action?

"I want that dress; I want a relationship like that; I want to have that kind of job."

Once I began to understand and reflect upon this epiphany, I realized it's my mindset. This stems from me having goals I want to accomplish but not taking the time to figure out how to do so. I'm the one who has the power and means to redirect the conversation and change the narrative.

Change the narrative from "I want..." to "I will..." By changing the narrative, it gives me a direction towards what type of action I need to take on how to accomplish the goal I want to set out and complete.

Take a moment to figure out if this is something you actually want and how you will go about accomplishing it? How will you work for it and get it?

You are the key player; you make the moves and have the power to change your narrative. By taking time out of your day to self reflect, this will not only help your future self, but also your present self. It's never too early or too late to become the best version of yourself.

Till next time, cheers!

30 Day Challenge

September 9, 2019

Youtubers today are v different from what they used to be. Though change is enviable and necessary, there are parts of this industry that make me annoyed and disappointed. Since I'm 22, this means I was growing up simultaneously with Youtube. I witnessed the foundation it was creating that has allowed it to become the empire it is today.

The type of video I watch depends on my mood. If I want fashion inspiration, Alex Garza is my go-to gal. If I need a fitness motivator, Sarahs Day is my gal and Zac Efron is my dude. If I want to feel relaxed and happy, I turn to Zoella and Alfie Deyes.

Of these Youtubers, Zoey and Alfie have been the OG's of this platform. As Youtube has grown, and unfortunately become a hub for drama and materialism, they have been able to stay constant and out of that black hole. Disclaimer: This is my own opinion and from my point of view.

Like many, I follow the people I enjoy watching on Youtube on Instagram. Alfie is one of my favorites to follow because he has not only grown artistically, but I genuinely enjoy reading his captions. Recently, one of his captions caught my eye; the 30 day challenge. This challenge has been mentioned in his latest vlogs but reading his own personal goals and the reasoning behind this challenge stuck with me.

To sum up his caption, he explained how your goals for the next 30 days don't need to be extreme, they can be simple and small changes you want to make to your life. He emphasized on how the goals you make for yourself are things you want to do better for yourself. Prior to this challenge, I had actually noticed a pattern within myself that came to the forefront of my mind after reading his caption.

Over the next 30 days, I want to focus on worrying less about what I don't have and focus on what I do have. I have recently found that it is extremely easy to say, "I want." Once I took a step back and started to count the times this phrase came to my mind, I was astound. It really adds up. Now, I want to preface this by saying that this phrase doesn't always come from a materialistic and greed point of view, rather it is a normal human reaction to anything. This can be applied to wanting a job, person, thing etc.

I mean, how else would anything stay in business?

There is nothing wrong with wanting things because this helps to keep us motivated and driven towards accomplishing our tasks to get there, but there comes a time when it's too much. That said I am going to try to stop myself from saying "I want" and focus on what I have because there is a lot to be thankful for and a lot I don't need. With this, I am going to find other positive phrases to use that ultimately have the same meaning to "I want" that are more motivating.

Though my job is social media and I love the creative outlet it provides, I briefly expressed that I was annoyed and disheartened by the current state of it. There are people in the spotlight who emphasis and overexpose how much money and brand items they have. To a point where many of their followers, as well as the Youtubers themselves, get into the habit of only buying expensive items without appreciating the brands and products.

For the people in the spotlight, I am not saying they should not be allowed to share what they have since they have worked for it. What I am saying is that there is a way to go about it without being obnoxious.

Circling back to Alfie, this is another reason why I enjoy his content. In the mist of other brand accounts I follow, it's refreshing and necessary to read captions that challenge me. I genuinely appreciate it. It feels as though he always knows when to kick my booty back into gear and how to positively influence his followers. When you get too comfortable in life, that's when you need to challenge yourself the most.

So, what are you going to do to better yourself these next 30 days?

Till next time, cheers!

Find Your Perfect Match

Being an aesthetically pleasing and unique business is a key factor of a business model today. Before Instagram, a gym just had to provide machines and maybe a couple of classes to peak one’s interest. Today, the type of exercise classes that are offered are not over the top but fun. Working out went from being a drag to becoming an event. You can do it in groups, take fun videos or photos, so on and so forth.

Although a class and studio may be aesthetically pleasing, is it physically pleasing? Was the hype worth your money by actually providing a good workout? Or, did it make you feel overwhelmed?

I have been through the wringer trying to find what works for me. During my fitness journey, I have tested a majority of fitness classes offered and here is my general list and rundown of my thoughts on those classes.
Class Rundown

  1. Spin classes: I have taken about 10 classes in my life. I do enjoy these classes but I don’t do this every day. I like the leg workout it provides but I’m more keen on classes that are a full-body workout. This class is perfect for my gals and guys looking to improve their cardio! What a way to strengthen it.

  1. Hiit classes: This had been my latest go-to. I started this in the Spring when I was still at university. Going into it, I was scared I was not strong enough for the circuits or it would be similar to CrossFit, which we'll get to my thoughts on that later. The reason why I believe this type of class is great for all levels of fitness because you can modify the movements and go at your own pace. Plus, it’s a group class so you can bring your friends along, hype each other up and then go to brunch. What a time.

  1. Crossfit: Many love this, many hate this. Unfortunately, I am the latter of this situation. I did not enjoy CrossFit one single second. I think the reason for that was because I was left to fend for myself which was a recipe for disaster. (As this article continues, you will see why). Great for self-motivated people who already have a sense of self-awareness, self-motivation and have a strength goal.

  1. Yoga: My true love. This may be because I was a dancer growing up but this is my favorite fitness class of all time. Your arms, core, and legs are continuously challenged and growing stronger. Also, it improves or helps you maintain your flexibility as well as your posture. My mind becomes blank as I focus on my breath and what pose I am doing. If you haven’t tried hot vinyasa, get your booty to a studio now. One of my favorite parts of working out is sweating it out. I feel not only accomplished but like all of the toxins in my body have been squeezed out. TMI? Sorry, not sorry. This class is perfect for anyone at any fitness caliber- unless you are an impatient person.
  2. Pilates: Yet another class that has my heart. Although it captured mine, this is a 50/50 for others. The reason? It targets the small muscles you don’t think about, you barely sweat, and it is pricier. By the end of a session, my legs and arms are shaking and the next day, I feel like a noodle. As I mentioned before, you barely sweat. I am not a scientist so I am unaware as to why this is but it’s true. Not dripping in sweat doesn’t mean you aren’t working hard, it’s just that everything moves slower. I would recommend this class as being a winter activity for special occasions when you want to treat yourself. As for fitness levels, again, another one that’s good for all levels.

  1. Boxing: The last of this mighty list. It is one of the best workouts, I believe. It is perfect for someone who wants their limbs to feel like jello and who wants to sweat a lot. This is a full-body workout, (again, not a certified fitness person so this may be dependent upon your studio). Good for upper body strength and cardio too. I would say if you are used to taking classes and have been in somewhat of a workout groove, this is well suited for you. If you are just starting, go for it! You can take breaks as needed but again, depending on the studio, it may be harder to adjust for yourself compared to a hiit class.

**Honorable mention: aerial yoga; what a workout**

But since I am not a verified fitness guru or instructor, you may be wondering how I came to gather these opinions and reviews?

Like many, I was active and on a sports team. Growing up as a dancer, I was used to having someone lead workouts, instruct me on what and how to do circuits. From Monday to Saturday, I danced for a minimum of 4-7 hours per day. Since I was fairly active, I did not go to the gym on my off days. Why? Well, I didn’t feel the need to.

(Not having any experience at the gym on my own is a key factor to keep in mind during this story.)

It wasn’t until college when I realized, I don’t know what to do. I would go to the gym, start on the elliptical and then do the same abs, arms, and leg exercises I would have done if I were still at practice. Although I had done this over and over in high school, this time it felt different. I was not as motivated and did not enjoy it as much. My rec center at school offered workout classes but I didn’t utilize this until my senior year- yeah yeah, I know, stupid.

So, this lovely cycle continued through freshman year, then when I came home, I started a boxing class with my mom over the summer. This is when I started to realize what I needed.

I need an instructor to be watching me and giving me orders because I feel the need to perform my best when someone is watching. I believe this stems from my dance background. I thoroughly enjoyed the boxing classes but also realized I needed to find another activity that allowed me to stretch and relax too, which is why I started rotating through yoga and pilates.

Pilates was only in the rotation when I was home since it was pricier and I went with my mom to her sessions. The movements were minimal and slow but they worked the muscles you usually would not target which is why I enjoyed it. As for yoga, we had a great studio at school that only charged $4 per class. I was able to find a way to relax, maintain my flexibility and stay active in a way that I was used to. Although I keep this form of exercise in my weekly rotation, this past spring I decided to try a hiit class for the first time.

Like I said before, I thought it would have been like CrossFit, which immediately made me skeptical about trying the class. But the first one was free, so what did I have to lose? After my free session, I loved it. My friends and I would go as a group- ultimately making it more fun as well as a way to hold each other accountable. Again, I truly believe the way that I grew up working out, being part of a team, has played a role in what type of classes I enjoy and how I need to work out.

I have been fortunate to have had the ability to test the waters and figure out which path works best for me. Since I have dabbled in various types of classes, I believe it would be useful to share my own experiences with others. Starting the groove of working out is hard and can be not fun for some. But once you’re in the game, you find what you like and what works for you, you start to feel physically and mentally better! Here’s to finding your perfect match.

Till next time, cheers!

Gotta Get Those Receipts

August 15, 2019

This is something I have been thinking about for a while and really just need to get off my chest. I need to start documenting and publishing some sort of list that states what trends will be next because my god, I am on a roll. I have been right; I deserve some credit and recognition for this.

So far I have been correct about the following:

1. High-waisted shorts
2. Tying things around your waist
        - And with this, the person who asked why I was wearing high-waisted shorts and a plaid shirt tied around my waist sophomore year of high school, circa 2013, screw you.
3. Flatlays
        - In 2014, I was posting these types of pics left and right. Pinterest could never.
4. Jeans skirts
5. Overalls
       - Okay, with 4 and 5, for the life of me, I could not find decent pieces anywhere so I bought this strangely long jean skirt from J.Crew because nothing else was available. As for the overalls, it was fine; not my fav but it was slim pickings out there guys.
6. Backpacks
        - Now, this trend wasn't one I predicted would take off. Since 2015, I always just preferred using my little Longchamp backpack because I could fit more and it was more practical.
        - Fallraven backpacks, again, a brand I liked and a style I liked too that I did not predict tbh but here we are. It has now become a staple for VSCO girls.
7. Off the shoulder tops
        - The lines on shirts were slowly disappearing, you could spot this trend from a mile away.
8.  Tube tops
        - Again, slowly parts disappear and suddenly, a 'new' design has appeared.
9. Trouser trend
        - My go-to pant style back during junior year of high school. Boy was I ahead of this one.
10. Fuzzy heels
        - Honestly, once I bought these fuzzy heels from Nordstorm in the Spring of 2018, I had a feeling the 2000s were creeping in. Between these, the jean skirts, and few silk dresses that had made their appearance amongst catalogs, I knew the storm was coming, Lip gloss and all.
11. Hoops
12. Flare Jeans
        - This one came to me back in October when I saw one pair for sale. Once you see one, more and more start to trickle on in.
13. Headbands
         - What would the 2000 comeback be without headbands? Blair Waldorf is quaking.
14. Blazers
         - Although I have been saying the 2000s are coming back, so are the 70s, 80s, and 90s. We have created a fashion buffet. We have blazers to fulfill our 70s desires, neons for an 80s accent, silk items as the main piece for the 90s and accessories have and always will be claimed by the 2000s.
15. One-shoulder tops
          - We have taken away any form of a sleeve, aka the tube top, so now it is time to slowly rebuild. Hence, the one-shoulder styled tops that are slowly but surely popping up around a store near you.
16. Paperbag Pants
          - Now, this is my latest success story in the works. The shorts have made its appearance and I saw a pair for sale on Free People. Once you see one, the waiting game begins.
17. Mesh Puff Sleeves
          - This one is fairly new and I needed to make sure to document this because I have a feeling about this one too. Hello 80s, thanks for reentering the game.

Do you see this track record? Do you see this? Do you understand why I wish I had the receipts!

Besides riding on the high of being right, I enjoy being able to guess the next big trend. It's just fun. All of these trends have had their moment before, this isn't their first rodeo. But this is how the fashion world works; pieces are just continuously recycled and revamped after x amount of years.  Now that the air is cleared, I can rest easy.

Till next time, cheers!
