Upward and Onward

January 6, 2022

The other night, one of my closest friends told me how proud she was of me. How proud she was of me for moving to the city, getting a job I adore, for being there and strong for my family when they needed me the most, and for being strong for myself. As kind as her words were, boy, did that throw me off since I was not prepared for such a compliment? And for once, the tears that welled in my eyes and were shed were no longer ones of sorrow but rather, tears of gratitude and happiness.

As I look at the timestamp of my last post, it seems I only come on here to dump my feelings during one of the hardest weeks of my life. Though, after gaining encouragement to continue on with more posts thanks to one of my lovely co-workers and friend (hi Tori), I want to get back into the groove of things. The first step starts with reclaiming my happiness. This actually also ties into another conversation my friend and I had where the main premise was that we're both so sick and tired of feeling sad. Although 2021 really took off 6 months into it, the beginning continued to bring along unwanted events and heartache. So with the knowledge and acceptance of having no control, I decided for this year, I will work on what I can control which is my communication. So, in light of honoring this, I will be honest and say I'm still putting the pieces of me back together.

A few months back, I remember seeing this graphic where it was an image of a glass jar with a ball inside of it. There were about six different size jars that all contained the same size ball. It was meant to display how grief works; the amount of pain and despair never lessens over time but the difference is that you learn to live with it. That initial despair that's felt during those first stages of grief is all-consuming and makes it impossible to feel like moving on is even an option. But as time goes on, your jar of life grows with you as you learn to adapt and build a stronger environment around it. Unfortunately, that shallow pain will still be ever so present but you just learn to accept it as another piece of you. Learning to grow with it is still a lesson I've not yet conquered or have wanted to fully accept. How am I supposed to come to terms with this chip in my heart when I would much rather have a full one again? As of late and as strange as it is, I found this interview Andrew Garfield did on the Stephen Colbert Show to be extremely comforting. He himself has experienced a great loss and when asked about his grief, he said he hopes that pain never fully goes away. (Which I thought was absolute madness because I would pay big bucks for someone to sew this hole right up!)

He said, "our grief is just all the unexpressed love we have." Life is all about love and grief and it's our job to make sure the love we feel is worth the grief. If that's our price to pay for this type of love then my god is it worth it. There's nothing in the world that can top the love for another being as great as this.

As I've mentioned previously, I'm a big believer in fate and signs. My papa may not physically be with me on this earth, but I feel his spirit daily. He likes to make an appearance especially when I'm thinking about him — he loves leaving a nice little sign for me. Whether it's a little blue jay coming to say hi, seeing bits and pieces of him in my mom, or hearing his message through music, I always know when it's him. My most recent example happened while I was at work this week. Having this week be that week, I decided to wear one of his sweaters to work. (To me, being able to wear his sweaters or sweatshirts is when I feel the closest to him since it feels like one of his big bear hugs.) As I started getting in my head about Friday and all the feelings that come with his anniversary, "that's why it hurts, it's supposed to. That's how it feels when you do it right," began to float through the air which then slowly transitioned into my ultimate comfort song, The Bones by Maren Morris. Typically, we'll go through the same round of playlists at work, and not once have I ever heard that song in the mix followed by The Bones. To me, it felt like he was telling me there's nothing wrong with how you are feeling. Love hurts and you're going to make it through this week just like you did last year and just like you will continue to do.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, I'm forever grateful for my obsessive need to take photos and videos. I now have an archive of memories stored for my eyes and ears whenever I need it. "I walk down memory lane because I love running into you."

Although I can't say I haven't cried this week or won't continue to have my moments on the 7th and throughout the year, I'm here to say I'm giving myself the grace to continue to feel all the emotions that come with healing. To continue to be proud of my strength and vulnerability, to continue to reclaim my happiness, and to not let the bastards grind me down. It's only upward and onward from here.

xx

From A Broken Heart To A Mending Heart

January 5, 2021

There's nothing in the world that can prepare you for the loss of a loved one and even if there were guidelines, they'd be absolutely useless because every situation is so uniquely their own.

It will be exactly one year on January 7th. One year since I've received his bear hugs, his kisses on my cheeks, his jokes, his unexpected yet timely wisdom, and his outpouring of adoration for me that used to wrap me in the most secure and warm blanket of love. I can't say that the hole in my heart has grown from housing anything other than a barren emptiness and, to be honest, I don't think it will ever be fully healed. But regardless, we survived- just barely hanging on by the tips of our fingernails.

This has been the absolute worst year of my life. Honestly, just throw the whole year away. Regardless of the fact that we are in a global pandemic, a true and unexpected curveball there, but just when I had started to feel somewhat decent and full of life again, boom, my mom got diagnosed with cancer. You really can't make this stuff up. Sometimes you just have to laugh at how cruel of a joke it can all be but also because if you don't laugh, you'll just keep crying.

But nevertheless, I persisted because in the words of my papa, "Don't let the bastards grind you down."

He should be proud though; I went from crying every single day for three months straight to only crying every day every 4 weeks, then down to 2 weeks, and now, I only cry a handful of times a month. For a woman who hates to discuss her emotions and allow others to see her feeling anything other than joy, this has been overwhelming and a push in a direction I needed but didn't want to necessarily take. For me, it's always so much easier to focus on others and how to help them. Understanding the importance of communicating my feelings with other people is a vital lesson I was never willingly open to, not for anything but I didn't feel comfortable in feeling and looking anything other than strong or put together. But this year, I've never leaned more into my family than I ever have in my life. We've learned how to openly discuss the hardships of loss, healing, moving forward, and everything else in between.

It's weird to even preface this next phrase without it sounding strange but to say I'm grateful to have lost my papa in January is not to be meant on a light note but rather from a place of privilege. My whole entire family was able to fly in for the services, I got to find comfort in the arms of my closest friend who rushed home to be there for me, and we got to host what felt to be a never-ending line of souls he had touched during his life at his wake. Is there a word beyond heartbreaking to even describe the hallowing feeling that consumes me when I think about all those who have lost a piece of them yet can't even be with them in the hospital, visit with them one last time or host the funerals they deserve?

Last time, I burst into tears as 'happy birthday' filled the air and rang through my ears at a dinner celebration with friends. This year, even though I can't have that same type of get-together, I promise to not shed a tear. Although I may never feel whole again, I know that I will continue to feel lighter. I was spoiled to have you as my papa for 22 years but now, you get to be a papa to my brother and sister again. Now, it's Lauren and Tyler's turn to experience all the wonderful things that come with knowing Libby Ferracane. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that you're reunited with the other gracious souls we lost in addition to you this year. A true party up there in heaven, I'm sure of it.

This year, I've realized a few things: I still absolutely hate your house; your chair catches my breath, your dinner table makes me sob, and every time I walk in there, your presence is so apparently absent it's almost suffocating- not to be dramatic. I also apparently now hate dinner- this took me a while to pinpoint, but, as of late, I found that it's because I know I'll never get to have you right at my side again, just how it had been all my life, oh and I hate that everywhere I look in my own home, I can picture exactly where you're supposed to be. But in the same sense, I also absolutely adore that familiarity. To feel so fortunate to have had such a present and strong bond with my grandparents. I may never feel that reassuring shake you used to give me as you held my hands as we sat together and chatted, I'll never see the admiration in your eyes as we talked about life, or physically see the bond you shared with Jack; man, that boy worships and admires every single bit of you. (I cannot even explain that heartache of your absence to him, you were his best friend.) I may never get those moments again but I have found solace in what I do have.

Almost immediately, and with permission obviously, I raided your closet. Having your clothes and being able to wear them make me feel so close to you again. The closest I will ever come to your hugs. Aunt Tricia also made all of the grandkids' and great-grandkids' teddy bears out of the famous staple white polo. He's also great for a hug too.

I cannot wait for the day where a smile becomes my first instinct when I see or hear something that reminds me of you, rather than the cloud of tears that well up in my eyes. I cannot wait to not have to relive every single detail of the day you passed on- I would like to burn the images of running through that hospital, thank you very much. And I cannot wait for this same healing for everyone else. Until that day, I know I have to go through the crashing waves before I can feel the calmness of this storm. We made it through the firsts of everything this year.

I still feel you and receive all your little messages you're sending down to me. I guess you could say this is me taking my pen and writing love letters to heaven in return.

It Wasn't Curiosity; It Was Superiority

May 29, 2020

Circa 2019 Summer

In case you haven't heard, we're currently in a global pandemic all thanks to the beloved COVID-19.

Now, you would think after watching the devastation that occurred and continues to infiltrate those in China, Italy, America, and the rest of the world, anyone with eyes, brain, and heart would understand the severity of the virus. But alas, we do not live in a perfect world.

Though I am fortunate to live where I do, have the opportunities and resources that I have, it is challenging to feel proud of my country- especially in times such as these. (Disclaimer: this was written prior to recent events- a discussion that will be discussed next.) People claim that the division within society and current social issues only arose back during the 2016 election but in reality, things have never truly been all that great, to begin with. It was only great for a select group of people. A category I most certainly do not find myself within if we rewound to the past.

Now we can argue about the specifics of when superiority came into play in America- such as when the Native Americans' lost their land to foreigners but regardless of when it happened, this complex has yet to retire. Don't believe me? Tune into any news channel.

Now, I do feel that since I have seen the drastic statistics of my home state, Illinois, and have been placed under extreme measures by my state, I cannot help but be completely gobsmacked by the rest of my country.

People have the right to freedom of speech but since when did your right to speech, which has taken physical form such as protesting, turn into the right to harm. This is in no way dramatizing the situation; by going out into large groups regardless of abundant health warnings, you have become a carrier of a virus that may not harm you but can and will harm others less fortunate than yourself. I don't believe it was your intention to turn into the grim reaper, was it? But regardless of it all, you have.

It is your right to freedom of speech but for the love of the big man upstairs, stop using him to aid your negative ways. Those who claim to be the most faithful are often the biggest hypocrites.

Recently, I saw a sign that said, "Take your mask off because God's got you covered." I cannot stress how sick I am of people who claim to be faithful followers as they use the bible as a crutch and twist his words. I too agree that everything happens for a reason because he has a plan for all of us. But I also believe there was a reason he gave us scientists', why he provided scientists' with the resources and minds to relay privy information to us to explain why it's important to use PPE, how to stay safe and so on. Just as he guided those to these medical discoveries, he also gave you a brain. He gave you a brain to use; to absorb, digest and rationalize the situation at hand.

Understand and empathize with the notion that you cannot be selfish during this time.
This has been the ultimate test of peoples' true colors.

PPE isn't for you, it's a barrier that is meant to shield others from possible harm you may carry.
Quarantine was not a punishment, it was to stop the spread of a deadly virus.

This was never just about you; the danger comes when you put yourself as the main character and forget about your fellow co-workers, extras, and staff.

Now let's say prior to this whole COVID-19 sitch, you had to go into the hospital for surgery. You're all set and ready to go when your doctor strolls into the operating room. As the surgeon descends towards you, you notice they're not wearing gloves, a mask, or any type of typical surgical gear. Um excuse me, this is not the proper protocol of a sterile environment nor what you have become accustomed to while watching Grey's. When you assertively exclaim to them that you're not letting them operate on you without their gear on, they simply ask what you could possible pass along to them while you're out? They may get something from you but you're mainly concerned with what they will give to you. Their PPE is not solely meant for them, it's mainly meant to protect you. A simple selfless act.

(Side note: as a general tip, if you're going to protest do your due diligence. It's your right to stand outside a government building but understand that there's been a quarantine and a majority of the nation have been working from home. A little counterproductive to protest to an empty building if you ask me. Which speaking of that, also understand that you cannot shoot a virus- it is not visible nor would a bullet do any damage anyways. It's oftentimes such as this that I find it interesting that it's suddenly your body and your choice. How handy. And with that, I digress.)

I do want to make it clear that I agree with all of our constitutional rights, obviously, I am currently utilizing the first one, but just because it's there doesn't mean you have to be greedy about it.

Freedom is like a buffet; an all-you-can-eat service. But with that comes great responsibility. You may grab as much as you want because you are free to do so but what about the consequences of overindulgence? An overstuffed ridden bellyache that will leave you comatose for hours. A lesson some learn from while others don't and will continue their ways until they get food poisoning.

Our founding fathers constructed the Bill of Rights during a precedented time of extreme lack of rights and rules set upon themselves, not created with their best interest in mind. The given rights we have now, have, in turn, lead us to become a lustful place for those who yearn for nothing more than basic human rights.

The rights that came from this have since turned into a power trip for some. It went from a social binary construct where at least one group benefitted but now, it has since turned into an egotistical circus. Every man for themselves. We flipped the switch from empathy to selfish needs real fast. This is not what the flip the switch challenge meant by the way.

You may be out of your mind bored at home, overcome with sadness about not being with your friends and going out to the bars but you could also be on a ventilator or having to spend last moments with loved ones via Facetime.

The pandemic isn't over just because you're bored. (Thank you Twitter for that line.)
And it is not gone just because the world is reopening.

Per usual, it's never a group as a whole that is rotten, just a few in the bunch but nevertheless, that's not how it's seen. To the rest of the world, America is yet again the selfish ridden has-beens who slapped a Gucci belt on and called it a day. To say we have a lot of work to do is an understatement of the century but everyone has room for growth but in order to evolve, being selfless, listening, and being empathetic must improve immensely.

It wasn't curiosity that killed the cat, it was its superiority complex.

Till next time, cheers!
