Skincare is Self-Care

September 29, 2019

(Published on Fashion 360 Magazine)

Skin is sensitive, both physically and literal for me. I didn't realize how lucky I was to have clear skin until I started experiencing breakouts.

If you have read my body bloom post, then the following information is nothing entirely new. If you are new, welcome lol. If not, you'll just be learning a little more about my journey with acne.

Prior to junior year of high school, I never had an issue with my skin. It was not sensitive, nor was it oily. The lack of issues led my skin to be put on the back burner of my mind. Then, things took a turn my junior year. My face would not calm down. I became a regular at the dermatologist; I was put on antibiotics, testing various face washes and lotions, was put on birth control, testing various topicals. So on and so forth.

Now, let me preface by saying this is not a pity party. As we all know, there are bigger issues in the world, but not having the ability to feel comfortable without wearing makeup sucks. It messes with your mind and confidence because you think it's the first thing people will notice about you and the only thing they will focus on. Luckily, we have come out on top my friends. I have found products and a routine that works. These products not only work, but they're also vegan and made with natural ingredients.

Have you ever watched the Youtube videos Allure produces? They are fascinating. Recently, I watched their video, 'The day in the life of a Dermatologist.' Though it was fascinating to watch Dr. Shereene Idriss go about her day, my favorite part was learning about her morning and nighttime skincare routine. This in turn, motivated me to modify my routine.

Over the past three weeks, I have put Dr. Idriss's tips and tricks to the test. I can honestly say I am extremely satisfied with the results. (I mean, I hoped for this because she is a dermatologist after all.) But I am so satisfied that I just had to share.

In the morning, it is best to wash your face with warm water only. Our skin has natural oils and when you use a face wash, you strip away the new layer your skin has created. (Using a face wash in the morning, strike one for me.) Then, dab your face with a towel to dry it; don't rub. (Strike two.)

Why dab and not rub? Dr. Idriss explained that when your skin is dry, a new layer of skin is working to regenerate and form. But by constantly rubbing your skin, this does not allow the new layer of skin to fully develop. Ultimately, creating a never-ending cycle of dry skin.

After washing my face, I use a reusable cotton pad to apply my Mario Badescu Rose Water Witch Hazel Toner. Next, I use a Vitamin C Radiance Serum by Honest to dab into my skin. The Honest Depuff Eye Gel is next to be applied to my face. The nice feature about this product is that a little goes a long way! The final skincare product the is applied to my face is a new favorite that was recommended by Dr. Idriss, Weleda Skin Food.

This cream is extremely hydrating and gives you a dewy glow, which I normally stray away from due to my oily skin, but there's something about this product that doesn't make me look and feel oily. Another suggestion Dr. Idriss made was to apply this cream with a beauty blender. This seemed strange to me at first but after using Weleda, I understand why this is important. It is a rich cream and by using the beauty blender, this helps to set the cream into your skin.

Since this article is all about skincare, I will not dive into my makeup routine. Rather, I will only make two suggestions in terms of a product and company to test out. As we all know, I have oily skin; shocking I know. This has led me to try a plethora of primers over the years. Recently, I have given Milk Hydro Grip Primer a try. Since it's a gel, it goes on cool and dries sticky which in turn, helps set my CC Cream I apply afterward. The CC Cream, setting power, and mascara I use are from Thrive Causemetics. Thrive is another paraben, sulfate, and cruelty-free company.

Once my day is over, one of the first things I do when I get home is use Honest Beauty Makeup Wipes to take off my makeup before changing into a comfy pair of sweatpants. From getting cozy to consuming a delicious meal, I hop into the shower. I wash my face with the First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser.

When it comes to washing my face at night, I have specific steps for specific days. On Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, I use my Clarisonic. I don't use my Clarisonic everyday since it would be too harsh and strip my skin down too much. So, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, I exfoliate my face with the Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner. Then, I repeat the same steps from my morning routine.

Apply Mario Badescu Rose Water Witch Hazel Toner (if I didn't exfoliate my face), Vitamin C Radiance Serum, and then the Honest Depuff Eye Gel. Before applying my face cream, I apply a Cosrx Acne Pimple Master Patch where it's needed. After the patched are placed on my spots, I will then massage Weleda Skin Food into my skin and hop into bed.

This seems like a lot of steps, but it's easy and quicker than you would think! As a subtle disclaimer, this routine works for me but skin varies person to person. The brands and products I have mentioned are not skin-specific. Meaning, they're not labeled as being only beneficial for a specific type of skin. As a general note, always do your research before investing.

Being aware of what you put on your body is just as important as as what you put in it!

Till next time, cheers!

For Better Or For Worse

September 27, 2019

Like many, Devil Wears Prada is a movie that is not only a classic that I've watched more times then I am willing to admit, but it is also a movie with a concept that continuously fascinates me. Each time I watch this film, I pick up a new lesson, easter egg or I find an old trend that's wormed its way back into todays fashion. Though from a young age, I have been in love with fashion, I understand this niche market is either loved or loathed. But regardless of how one feels, it will always be part of one's life.

Just as Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly had said Anne Hathaway's Andy,

"This stuff’? Oh, okay. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh, I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean. You’re also blindly unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic 'casual corner' where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”

And with that, I digress.

As I stated before, fashion is a 50/50 for people. No matter your stance on fashion, you cannot deny the fact that your clothes play a role in some shape, way and form within your life. We all have that one piece that brings back fond memories we hold dear to our heart, that makes us feel so confident we channel a different persona that day, or that is our comfort blanket.

I view fashion as being a walking form of art. Dramatic? Maybe, but hear me out. On the outside, we as humans are a blank canvas. Our body provides endless possibilities of outfits to wear and our mind provides us with endless ideas of how to wear outfits. Though I still consider myself to be introverted at times, fashion has allowed me to grow and gain confidence within myself to be extroverted.

It allowed me to present my personality and who I am to the world without having to say a single word. It allowed me to feel as though I found who I am. It has been a constant amongst the ever changing phases of my life. My clothes make me feel secure and confident with my decisions because my outfits are usually inspired by someone I look up to which whom possess characteristics I admire and want to channel myself.

Does this mean I am not staying true or putting up a fraud version of myself out into the world? No. Rather, I am allowing myself to highlight these characteristics I admire and do contain myself to be given the boost they need to shine.

I've had this thought about fashion for awhile now. To say it annoys me when people automatically assume I am snotty or stuck-up based on the pretense that I like fashion is an understatement. I never knew how to properly explain why clothes matter and play a role in your life until I read Amy Smilovic's Instagram caption for one of her pictures back in August.

Yes, I understand this all seems trivial and silly but can you deny the fact that you've had experiences similar to me? The first time you put on heels and felt like you could conquer the world, the first time you put on your new gym shoes and knew you would kill your next game, the first time you put on your scrubs knowing you were on your way to where you want to be.

No matter how you pick-out your outfit, with a lot of thought or very little, you picked those pieces for a reason. To feel some sort of comfort. That feeling of comfort lies into feeling confident with yourself and your gut. That no matter which decisions you have to make the rest of the day, whether your day was good or sucked, at least you know you did one thing right.

Till next time, cheers!

Changing The Narrative

September 22, 2019

Though it hasn't been a full 30 days since I started the 30 Day Challenge, here's what I have noticed thus far...

If you're new, welcome! If you've been here before, welcome back!

In my previous post, I mentioned that I am participating in Alfie Deyes 30 Day Challenge. The challenge I set out for myself is to focus on what I do have rather than what I want and don't have. I found that the phrase "I want..." is relevant for material things, jobs, relationships so on. Last week, I was thinking about where this narrative stems from. Why is it in a future tense that ultimately doesn't have action?

"I want that dress; I want a relationship like that; I want to have that kind of job."

Once I began to understand and reflect upon this epiphany, I realized it's my mindset. This stems from me having goals I want to accomplish but not taking the time to figure out how to do so. I'm the one who has the power and means to redirect the conversation and change the narrative.

Change the narrative from "I want..." to "I will..." By changing the narrative, it gives me a direction towards what type of action I need to take on how to accomplish the goal I want to set out and complete.

Take a moment to figure out if this is something you actually want and how you will go about accomplishing it? How will you work for it and get it?

You are the key player; you make the moves and have the power to change your narrative. By taking time out of your day to self reflect, this will not only help your future self, but also your present self. It's never too early or too late to become the best version of yourself.

Till next time, cheers!

30 Day Challenge

September 9, 2019

Youtubers today are v different from what they used to be. Though change is enviable and necessary, there are parts of this industry that make me annoyed and disappointed. Since I'm 22, this means I was growing up simultaneously with Youtube. I witnessed the foundation it was creating that has allowed it to become the empire it is today.

The type of video I watch depends on my mood. If I want fashion inspiration, Alex Garza is my go-to gal. If I need a fitness motivator, Sarahs Day is my gal and Zac Efron is my dude. If I want to feel relaxed and happy, I turn to Zoella and Alfie Deyes.

Of these Youtubers, Zoey and Alfie have been the OG's of this platform. As Youtube has grown, and unfortunately become a hub for drama and materialism, they have been able to stay constant and out of that black hole. Disclaimer: This is my own opinion and from my point of view.

Like many, I follow the people I enjoy watching on Youtube on Instagram. Alfie is one of my favorites to follow because he has not only grown artistically, but I genuinely enjoy reading his captions. Recently, one of his captions caught my eye; the 30 day challenge. This challenge has been mentioned in his latest vlogs but reading his own personal goals and the reasoning behind this challenge stuck with me.

To sum up his caption, he explained how your goals for the next 30 days don't need to be extreme, they can be simple and small changes you want to make to your life. He emphasized on how the goals you make for yourself are things you want to do better for yourself. Prior to this challenge, I had actually noticed a pattern within myself that came to the forefront of my mind after reading his caption.

Over the next 30 days, I want to focus on worrying less about what I don't have and focus on what I do have. I have recently found that it is extremely easy to say, "I want." Once I took a step back and started to count the times this phrase came to my mind, I was astound. It really adds up. Now, I want to preface this by saying that this phrase doesn't always come from a materialistic and greed point of view, rather it is a normal human reaction to anything. This can be applied to wanting a job, person, thing etc.

I mean, how else would anything stay in business?

There is nothing wrong with wanting things because this helps to keep us motivated and driven towards accomplishing our tasks to get there, but there comes a time when it's too much. That said I am going to try to stop myself from saying "I want" and focus on what I have because there is a lot to be thankful for and a lot I don't need. With this, I am going to find other positive phrases to use that ultimately have the same meaning to "I want" that are more motivating.

Though my job is social media and I love the creative outlet it provides, I briefly expressed that I was annoyed and disheartened by the current state of it. There are people in the spotlight who emphasis and overexpose how much money and brand items they have. To a point where many of their followers, as well as the Youtubers themselves, get into the habit of only buying expensive items without appreciating the brands and products.

For the people in the spotlight, I am not saying they should not be allowed to share what they have since they have worked for it. What I am saying is that there is a way to go about it without being obnoxious.

Circling back to Alfie, this is another reason why I enjoy his content. In the mist of other brand accounts I follow, it's refreshing and necessary to read captions that challenge me. I genuinely appreciate it. It feels as though he always knows when to kick my booty back into gear and how to positively influence his followers. When you get too comfortable in life, that's when you need to challenge yourself the most.

So, what are you going to do to better yourself these next 30 days?

Till next time, cheers!

Find Your Perfect Match

Being an aesthetically pleasing and unique business is a key factor of a business model today. Before Instagram, a gym just had to provide machines and maybe a couple of classes to peak one’s interest. Today, the type of exercise classes that are offered are not over the top but fun. Working out went from being a drag to becoming an event. You can do it in groups, take fun videos or photos, so on and so forth.

Although a class and studio may be aesthetically pleasing, is it physically pleasing? Was the hype worth your money by actually providing a good workout? Or, did it make you feel overwhelmed?

I have been through the wringer trying to find what works for me. During my fitness journey, I have tested a majority of fitness classes offered and here is my general list and rundown of my thoughts on those classes.
Class Rundown

  1. Spin classes: I have taken about 10 classes in my life. I do enjoy these classes but I don’t do this every day. I like the leg workout it provides but I’m more keen on classes that are a full-body workout. This class is perfect for my gals and guys looking to improve their cardio! What a way to strengthen it.

  1. Hiit classes: This had been my latest go-to. I started this in the Spring when I was still at university. Going into it, I was scared I was not strong enough for the circuits or it would be similar to CrossFit, which we'll get to my thoughts on that later. The reason why I believe this type of class is great for all levels of fitness because you can modify the movements and go at your own pace. Plus, it’s a group class so you can bring your friends along, hype each other up and then go to brunch. What a time.

  1. Crossfit: Many love this, many hate this. Unfortunately, I am the latter of this situation. I did not enjoy CrossFit one single second. I think the reason for that was because I was left to fend for myself which was a recipe for disaster. (As this article continues, you will see why). Great for self-motivated people who already have a sense of self-awareness, self-motivation and have a strength goal.

  1. Yoga: My true love. This may be because I was a dancer growing up but this is my favorite fitness class of all time. Your arms, core, and legs are continuously challenged and growing stronger. Also, it improves or helps you maintain your flexibility as well as your posture. My mind becomes blank as I focus on my breath and what pose I am doing. If you haven’t tried hot vinyasa, get your booty to a studio now. One of my favorite parts of working out is sweating it out. I feel not only accomplished but like all of the toxins in my body have been squeezed out. TMI? Sorry, not sorry. This class is perfect for anyone at any fitness caliber- unless you are an impatient person.
  2. Pilates: Yet another class that has my heart. Although it captured mine, this is a 50/50 for others. The reason? It targets the small muscles you don’t think about, you barely sweat, and it is pricier. By the end of a session, my legs and arms are shaking and the next day, I feel like a noodle. As I mentioned before, you barely sweat. I am not a scientist so I am unaware as to why this is but it’s true. Not dripping in sweat doesn’t mean you aren’t working hard, it’s just that everything moves slower. I would recommend this class as being a winter activity for special occasions when you want to treat yourself. As for fitness levels, again, another one that’s good for all levels.

  1. Boxing: The last of this mighty list. It is one of the best workouts, I believe. It is perfect for someone who wants their limbs to feel like jello and who wants to sweat a lot. This is a full-body workout, (again, not a certified fitness person so this may be dependent upon your studio). Good for upper body strength and cardio too. I would say if you are used to taking classes and have been in somewhat of a workout groove, this is well suited for you. If you are just starting, go for it! You can take breaks as needed but again, depending on the studio, it may be harder to adjust for yourself compared to a hiit class.

**Honorable mention: aerial yoga; what a workout**

But since I am not a verified fitness guru or instructor, you may be wondering how I came to gather these opinions and reviews?

Like many, I was active and on a sports team. Growing up as a dancer, I was used to having someone lead workouts, instruct me on what and how to do circuits. From Monday to Saturday, I danced for a minimum of 4-7 hours per day. Since I was fairly active, I did not go to the gym on my off days. Why? Well, I didn’t feel the need to.

(Not having any experience at the gym on my own is a key factor to keep in mind during this story.)

It wasn’t until college when I realized, I don’t know what to do. I would go to the gym, start on the elliptical and then do the same abs, arms, and leg exercises I would have done if I were still at practice. Although I had done this over and over in high school, this time it felt different. I was not as motivated and did not enjoy it as much. My rec center at school offered workout classes but I didn’t utilize this until my senior year- yeah yeah, I know, stupid.

So, this lovely cycle continued through freshman year, then when I came home, I started a boxing class with my mom over the summer. This is when I started to realize what I needed.

I need an instructor to be watching me and giving me orders because I feel the need to perform my best when someone is watching. I believe this stems from my dance background. I thoroughly enjoyed the boxing classes but also realized I needed to find another activity that allowed me to stretch and relax too, which is why I started rotating through yoga and pilates.

Pilates was only in the rotation when I was home since it was pricier and I went with my mom to her sessions. The movements were minimal and slow but they worked the muscles you usually would not target which is why I enjoyed it. As for yoga, we had a great studio at school that only charged $4 per class. I was able to find a way to relax, maintain my flexibility and stay active in a way that I was used to. Although I keep this form of exercise in my weekly rotation, this past spring I decided to try a hiit class for the first time.

Like I said before, I thought it would have been like CrossFit, which immediately made me skeptical about trying the class. But the first one was free, so what did I have to lose? After my free session, I loved it. My friends and I would go as a group- ultimately making it more fun as well as a way to hold each other accountable. Again, I truly believe the way that I grew up working out, being part of a team, has played a role in what type of classes I enjoy and how I need to work out.

I have been fortunate to have had the ability to test the waters and figure out which path works best for me. Since I have dabbled in various types of classes, I believe it would be useful to share my own experiences with others. Starting the groove of working out is hard and can be not fun for some. But once you’re in the game, you find what you like and what works for you, you start to feel physically and mentally better! Here’s to finding your perfect match.

Till next time, cheers!
